Dear Students, Families and Friends:

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year!

My name is Mr. Tom Forbes, proud principal of the Akron Early College High School.

I am a graduate of Woodridge High School, Class of 1975, Kent State University, B.A., Class of 1979, and Ashland University, M.ED., Class of 1990. I have great memories of my time growing up in Peninsula, Ohio. Being from a small town, my early years in Peninsula and the Woodridge Schools cemented my strong feeling about how beneficial it is to to be known by neighbors, teachers, and friends as a unique individual. I feel like I grew up in a family of 600 people, and I hope to create that same feeling for the students at AECHS.

Early in my career I was employed by the Berea City School District in suburban Cleveland as an English and speech teacher at both Berea and Midpark High Schools. From there, I followed my older brother, Terry Forbes, to Canton McKinley High School, were I taught English for almost 20 years. Moving into a central office position at Canton City, I directed the testing office and the career education program before taking a principalship at Timken High School. After four years at Timken, I was fortunate to be offered the job of founding principal at the Canton Early College High School.

My wife is Liesl Forbes, an English and psychology teacher at Canton McKinley for 28 years. I have two sons. Stephen is a junior at Kent State University and a baritone player and a leader in the Golden Flashes Marching Band. Jeff, my youngest, is just beginning his college career at The University of Akron, majoring in mathematics. We also have a Labrador named Kayley that we consider part of the family.

Here's to the beginning of another great year!
